For a rustic, no frills picking experience then head on down to McCann Berry Farm where you will be made very welcome, whilst enjoying some fresh air and picking your berries.
“McCann Berry Farm in Woodstock, Illinois is celebrating 38 years of u-pick berries! Bob and Mary McCann planted their first strawberry crop in 1982, in rural Woodstock, on land bordering the North Branch of the Kishwaukee River.
While not certified organic, we use an Integrated Pest Management Approach to control crop pests, and use as little pesticides as possible. Our berry plants are selected for their disease and pest resistance, as well as, their taste. We monitor the crop for pests and use controls only when pest populations reach a level of potential crop destruction.”
McCann Berry Farm grows Blueberries and Sunflowers.

Then, the girl at the stand was very kind and knowledgeable, made me feel like a berry master with my rope and bucket.
It was a laid-back orchard where buckets and ropes were provided, we were walked to our own row of bushes to pick, and stayed as long as we wanted.
When we were done, we weighed the blueberries, paid, and had a small picnic in the parking lot under a tree by the car before leaving.
But that's wasn't all-- the highlight of my visit was when some polish woman thought she was going to steal my berries by sneaking up behind me and untying my rope and bucket from around my waist, but luckily for me (not so much for her) I was quick to turn around and clean her clock!
She should be thankful all she ended up with was a bloody nose, I'm sure she learned her lesson and won't attempt that again.
